Daily Devotional: Learning to Hear at the Spirit Level

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

Life Sayings:

  • God comes to those who make room for Him.

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” —Romans 8:16

If God is always near, why does He sometimes feel so far away? Scripture tells us plainly that He is present. Jesus promises in Matthew 28:20, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Psalm 139 says that we cannot flee from His presence. Even before a word is on our tongue, He knows it. Yet for many, that truth doesn't match their experience.

The disconnect often lies in how we’ve been trained to live. Western culture places a heavy emphasis on intellect and emotion. We learn to trust what we think and what we feel. But the Bible reveals another layer of our humanity: the spirit. According to Romans 8:16, God communes with us at the spirit level, not primarily through our thoughts or feelings. If we are unaware of our spirit, we may miss His voice entirely.

The spirit is the part of us that was designed to host the presence of God. It is the inner sanctuary where divine fellowship takes place. When the Bible speaks of the heart, it often refers to this deep place of spiritual awareness and interaction. Yet, because we have ignored this part of ourselves, many have dulled their sensitivity to God's voice.

This does not mean that God is silent. It means we have been tuning in to the wrong frequency. We’ve been listening for an emotional wave or a mental insight, when He is gently whispering to our spirit. As Elijah learned, the Lord was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire—but in the still small voice (1 Kings 19:12).

Tuning in begins with awareness. We must become students of our inner life. What is driving our thoughts? What is fueling our emotions? Are they springing from selfishness, fear, or woundedness—or from a place of deep assurance that we are God’s children?

God comes to those who make room for Him. Making room means becoming quiet. It means paying attention to what is happening inside of us—not only what we think or feel, but how our spirit is responding to Him. We grow by practicing that awareness daily. His Spirit is bearing witness with our spirit. We must learn to listen.

Reflection Question

How aware am I of my spirit? Do I ever pause to ask what God might be speaking at that deeper level?

Prayer

Lord, I confess that I have been more aware of my thoughts and emotions than of Your Spirit speaking to mine. Quiet my heart today. Help me become more aware of the spiritual part of me where You dwell. Teach me to hear Your voice and respond. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Step of Obedience

Take five minutes today to sit in silence with God. Don’t analyze or strive. Simply ask, “God, is there anything You want to speak to my spirit today?” Wait quietly and listen with expectation.
