Daily Devotional: Pain Points Toward Purpose

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28, NKJV)

Pain often feels like an enemy. It interrupts plans, steals peace, and exposes weakness. Yet pain can also function like an arrow. It points toward what matters most. A person is rarely wounded in areas that mean nothing. Wounds tend to land where caring is deep.

This truth changes how I interpret the painful places in my story. If I can only be hurt by what I care about, then my pain may be revealing my passions. Passions point toward calling. Passions point toward purpose. Passion defines who I am and what I am meant to give. The enemy loves to strike at those places because they are often the places of greatest potential fruit.

The temptation is to withdraw from what hurts. The heart says, “If this is the price, it is not worth it.” The result is a smaller life. The heart becomes cautious. The risk-taking required for love, community, and mission gets replaced by a self-protective existence. That path may reduce immediate discomfort, yet it also reduces meaning.

God’s way is not reckless exposure. God’s way is purposeful engagement. He teaches me to move toward the places of caring while staying connected to Him as my source. God’s presence is what makes engagement possible. Without Him, caring can become anguish. With Him, caring can become strength.

This is also why “transfer” matters in healing. A wound creates a weight. The heart tries to carry it alone. That weight eventually hardens the soul. The better path is to transfer the burden to God. He is not asking me to pretend it does not hurt. He is asking me to stop carrying it as if I were the savior of my own heart.

Pain is not automatically redemptive. Pain becomes redemptive when it is brought into the presence of God and responded to with faith. When pain shows up, I can ask better questions. “What does this reveal about what I value?” “What does this reveal about my calling?” “What part of me is being invited to grow?” Those questions turn pain from a dead-end into a doorway.

So today I refuse to let pain talk me out of purpose. I acknowledge the wound. I also acknowledge the deeper truth: what I care about is likely where I am called to invest the most significant energy of my life. God can heal, strengthen, and mature me there. Healing does not remove purpose. Healing restores purpose.

Reflection Question

What does my most persistent pain reveal about what I care about most deeply?

Prayer

Father, help me see my pain through the lens of purpose. Show me what my wounds reveal about what I care about and what You have called me to. Teach me to transfer burdens to You and to stay connected rather than withdrawing into self-protection. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Write two lists: “Pain areas” and “Possible passions beneath them.” Ask God to highlight one area where He wants to restore purpose rather than allow avoidance.
