Daily Devotional: The Law of the Spirit of Life

“Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3, NKJV)

Godly people learn to work together in partnership with God and with each other. That kind of partnership will often result in rules, but not rigid, lifeless rules that replace relationship. The deeper goal is that we learn to walk under the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.

Rules by themselves do not set us free. The Spirit sets us free. Rules can reveal what is wrong. They can create structure. They can clarify shared values. They can expose rebellion, immaturity, selfishness, or confusion. But freedom comes when we connect with God and with others in a way that allows us to receive life.

That is why rules should never become an excuse to stop listening to God. As we grow, our rules may need periodic revision. The more we see Him and the better we understand how He operates, the more we need to communicate about how to do His life together. Some rules will stay firm because they reflect clear biblical truth. Other rules will change because situations change, maturity changes, and the application of wisdom changes.

Where there is no trust, the best that can happen is clearly defined rules. Evil men need clear rules with stronger consequences because their hearts are not yet governed by love. Godly men need guidance. They can work from shared values, open communication, and sensitivity to the Spirit. They do not need every detail dictated because they are learning to live from the inside out.

That is the destination of heart change. Not lawlessness. Not rebellion. Not rigid performance. Spirit-led life. God wants my whole heart. He wants the part that wants to resist rules, and He wants the part that wants to control others through rules. He wants the whole thing brought under the lordship of Christ.

Open communication matters. Hidden agendas are demonic. If we are going to do life together, we need to be candid about how and why we operate. We need to state expectations clearly. We need to state consequences openly. We need to work through conflict instead of avoiding it with more rules. We need to pursue righteousness in a way that keeps relationship available whenever possible.

The goal of rules is not to leverage power but to produce righteousness. If enforcing a rule cuts off relationship unnecessarily, we should ask whether we are enforcing it in a way that lines up with God’s purpose. Sometimes consequences are needed. Sometimes separation is necessary. But the heart posture should remain redemptive.

Live by what is right, not by what feels right. The Spirit of life teaches us what is right from the inside. Rules can guide us, but the Holy Spirit must govern us. That is where freedom grows.

Reflection Question

Am I more likely to reject rules, hide behind rules, or let rules lead me into Spirit-led growth?

Prayer

Father, teach me to live under the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. Use rules to reveal, guide, and train me, but do not let me settle for outward performance. Lead me into open communication, shared values, and true partnership with You and others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Choose one rule, expectation, or conflict point in your life. Ask, “What would it look like to handle this under the law of the Spirit of life rather than fear, control, or self-protection?”
