Daily Devotional: The Layers of the Heart

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

Life Sayings:

  • If it don’t show up, I won’t grow up.

  • It’s not about perfection but direction—fail forward.

“For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.”— Isaiah 28:10

“The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.”— Proverbs 29:15

Heart change doesn’t happen all at once. It’s built layer by layer—line upon line, precept upon precept. Just like a computer runs on precise lines of code, the human heart is full of programmed responses—many of which we didn’t consciously choose. But God, in His mercy, allows life to “trigger” those hidden lines of code so that we can see where transformation is needed.

The foundation of a godly heart is laid in obedience. Just as military recruits are trained to respond to commands before anything else, we too must learn to respond to God's authority before we can grow into maturity. Obedience is not just for rule-following—it’s the beginning of becoming fully human.

You see, we’re born selfish. Every child begins life focused on their own needs and wants. But the moment we begin to care how our actions affect someone else—that’s when true humanization begins. It’s the shift from “my toy” to “how did that make you feel?” That’s the moment we begin to look outside of ourselves—and that’s when God can begin to do some of His deepest work.

Sometimes God uses pain to get our attention. Sometimes He uses accountability. At the Omega Project, we saw a clear shift when we increased accountability in those first 30 days. Why? Because obedience—even if motivated by external pressure—can begin to crack open a hardened heart. And once that heart begins to open, the possibility for true transformation is born.

But make no mistake: many people never get past that first layer. They obey only to avoid punishment. They manipulate to maintain control. They lie and even believe their own lies. They remain isolated, strategic, and self-protective. Until someone sees the pain they’ve caused—or experiences genuine love from someone trustworthy—their hearts remain sealed.

That’s why healthy relationships matter. A trustworthy parent. A strong mentor. A loving friend. These people become the windows through which we begin to see God. If those windows are shattered by trauma, neglect, or manipulation, it becomes that much harder to believe in a God who says He is good.

Yet God never gives up. He keeps pursuing. He keeps placing people in our lives to soften us—to help us see, feel, and connect. And when we do? That’s when trust begins. That’s when obedience stops being forced and starts being a willing response of love. That’s when the layers of the heart begin to rewrite themselves in the image of Christ.

Reflection Question

What layer of your heart is God currently working on—and how are you responding?

Prayer

Lord, I see that my heart has been written with layers—some that align with Your truth and some that don’t. Help me to allow You to rewrite the code. Thank You for the people You’ve used to humanize me, to show me love, and to call me higher. Keep building line upon line until I reflect Your heart more and more. Amen.

Today’s Step of Obedience

Pause today to reflect on a moment when you caused pain to someone else. Let that memory soften you. Ask God to show you how to respond with humility, empathy, and love—and take a step to make things right.
