Life Sayings:
Triggers don’t cause my sin—they reveal it.
"The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart." —Proverbs 20:27 (NKJV)
There have been moments when I surprised even myself. A quick outburst. A sharp, sarcastic jab. A cold silence. I didn’t plan to act that way—it just happened. But when I look deeper, I realize nothing just “happens.” That moment of being triggered didn’t create my response. It exposed it.
According to Proverbs 20:27, my spirit functions like a lamp in the hands of the Lord. When life bumps me, what spills out is a reflection of what’s been stored inside. God uses triggers to illuminate the hidden places of the heart. Not to shame me, but to help me heal.
These sudden reactions are rarely rational. They bypass logic and go straight to the heart. Triggers are often connected to old pain, deep fear, pride, or hidden insecurity. They catch me off guard because I didn’t know those things were still in there.
Jesus rebuked the Pharisees, not because they didn’t know Scripture, but because their hearts were far from God. They said the right things, but their spirits were not aligned with Him. Eventually, even their polished words betrayed them. So it is with me—when the heart is full, it will overflow. That overflow may come in words or in a glance or a mood I carry without explanation.
If I want to grow in Christ, I must learn to notice these spiritual flickers. James 1:14–15 reminds us that sin begins as desire. When it’s small, it’s manageable. But if I let it grow—nurture it with thoughts, justify it with pride, or bury it under denial—it will become action. And then, lifestyle. And eventually, death.
God’s goal is not just to keep me from sinning outwardly. His goal is to restore my heart so I no longer want the things that lead to sin. That restoration begins when I stop blaming the trigger and start examining the treasure it uncovered.
Reflection Question
What was a recent moment where you felt “triggered”? What did that moment reveal about your internal patterns or beliefs?
Prayer
Father, thank You for shining the light of Your Spirit into my heart. I confess that I have blamed people and circumstances for my sinful responses. Today I ask You to reveal what is truly stored in my heart. Help me not to fear what You show me, but to respond with humility and repentance. Heal what is broken and plant what is good.
Today’s Step of Obedience
Write down one trigger moment from the past week. Take time to prayerfully ask God what spiritual belief, wound, or sin it exposed. Invite Him into that space with truth and grace.
