Daily Devotional: Designed for Flow

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

Life Sayings:

  • What flows through me sticks to me.

“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” —Luke 6:37–38 (NKJV)

We were designed for flow—spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. Just as our bloodstream circulates oxygen and nutrients to give physical life, so the human spirit is meant to circulate what we receive from God. When that connection is healthy, our lives reflect His presence. When it’s not, everything gets contaminated.

God made us to receive His presence and His Word as spiritual oxygen and nourishment. These are intended to circulate through our lives and bring life to others. The problem arises when something toxic flows through instead—judgment, bitterness, pride, or self-pity. What flows through us doesn't just touch the people around us. It shapes us. It changes our inner world. It affects the health of our soul.

The same principle is seen in the bloodstream. When infection enters the blood, the blood still flows. It doesn’t stop moving, but what it carries can become deadly. The same is true spiritually. The human spirit is always transmitting something. Whatever we allow to flow through us has impact, both outward and inward. Our words might say one thing, but the deeper reality is shaped by our spirit. God does not respond to what we say as much as He responds to what flows through our hearts.

Luke 6 teaches us that what we give out spiritually returns to us multiplied. If we sow judgment, we reap judgment. If we sow mercy, mercy returns. If we sow generosity of spirit, then that is what comes back to us in abundance. We cannot control everything that happens in life, but we can take responsibility for what flows through us. When I change my internal flow, my situation begins to change. I become a different person, and that begins to shape the world around me.

There is no neutral flow. Everything that flows through us will either nourish us or infect us. It will either build us into the image of Christ or deform us with cynicism, fear, or pride. The person who constantly sees himself as a victim will carry that mentality into every relationship, reinforcing helplessness and resentment. Even when life brings legitimate hardship, God’s desire is to meet us there, shape our hearts, and release His Spirit through us.

The most consistent predictor of outcomes in my life is not the behavior of others or the circumstances I face—it’s the internal flow of my heart. God is watching that flow. He responds not to outward performance but to inward posture. That’s why Proverbs 4:23 tells us to “keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”

When I allow His Spirit to flow through me—His kindness, His truth, His grace—I begin to look more like Him. Those heart flows shape my words, my actions, and eventually my outcomes. When I change, my situation changes. When I give out something different, I begin to receive something different in return.

Reflection Question

What is currently flowing through your heart—judgment, bitterness, peace, mercy, fear, or grace?

Prayer

Father, I want to be a vessel of Your Spirit. Reveal to me what I’ve been allowing to flow through my heart. Where there is bitterness, pride, or self-pity, I ask You to cleanse me. Fill me instead with Your Word, Your presence, and Your perspective. Help me to live from a place of spiritual flow that honors You and blesses others. Amen.

Today’s Step of Obedience

Pay attention to your internal responses today. Choose one situation where you are tempted to respond in judgment or frustration and instead ask God to help you release mercy or grace.
