Daily Devotional: Winning the War for the Temple

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10, NKJV)

To be successful in our Christian walk, we will need to win. That sounds intense, yet it is honest. Scripture never treats the spiritual life as a casual stroll. There is a real enemy, real temptation, and real pressure on the soul. Jesus described a thief who comes “to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” If I pretend there is no battle, I will live unprepared and wonder why I keep losing ground.

God designed my life to be a temple for His presence. That means there is “space” in me that was meant to be filled with God’s life. The battle is over that space. The demonic realm wants access to rule what belongs to God. The Holy Spirit wants to occupy what belongs to God. I get the deciding vote, not because I control everything, but because my choices, words, and actions open doors.

This is why one of the sayings matters so much: “God doesn’t go where I don’t go.” God does not force His way into areas I refuse to surrender. He invites. He calls. He convicts. He guides. He waits for my response. If I keep a part of my life off-limits, I should not be surprised when darkness finds a foothold there. Surrender is not a loss. Surrender is protection.

The spirit realm is also a multiplier. Spiritual influence grows when it is welcomed, rehearsed, and acted on. Darkness multiplies when I repeatedly speak and act out of pride, lust, bitterness, and self-rule. Light multiplies when I speak and act out of humility, obedience, repentance, and worship. This is not superstition. It is the practical reality of spiritual law. What flows through me shapes me, and it also stirs the atmosphere around me.

Many days it feels like I am just making choices in a vacuum. Yet Scripture suggests there is more happening than I see. Angels minister. Demons tempt. The war is not always loud, yet it is constant. A trigger comes, and the abundance of the heart spills out before I even notice. That is the law of sin and death at work. Unless I make a focused effort to rule over myself, my old nature will keep getting triggered. Then sin flows, and the heart is slowly transformed into its image.

This is why God calls me to take the battle seriously without becoming fearful. Fear is not faith. God has not called me to panic, but to choose. He has called me to submit my will and ask for His empowering presence. He has called me to give Him my first and best. He has called me to practice daily alignment so the temple remains His.

So today I choose a simple stance: as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. That is not bravado. It is a commitment. It is me putting a stake in the ground and saying, “This space belongs to God.” That is where breaking through begins.

Reflection Question

Where have I been treating the spiritual battle lightly, and what has it cost me?

Prayer

Father, I want my life to be a temple for Your presence. Open my eyes to the spiritual battle without letting fear take over. Strengthen my will to choose You, surrender to You, and serve You in every part of my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Identify one area of your life that feels contested (speech, habits, relationships, thought life). Pray: “Lord, this space belongs to You,” then take one concrete step that aligns that area with Scripture today.
