“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.” — Colossians 3:15, NKJV
Heart Change Insight
“Peace is not meant to be a small visitor that shows up occasionally. Peace is meant to rule.” — from my The Anxiety Iceberg eBook
Sometimes we experience peace and hope the struggle is behind us. Then an old fear rises, our body becomes tense, or a familiar reaction returns. We may wonder whether anything really changed.
But the return of a struggle does not erase the growth God has begun. In The New Heart, we explain that “heart change is not immediate. It takes work over a period of time.” Freedom is not proved by never needing to return to truth, receive help, or become still again. Freedom grows as we learn to recognize what is trying to rule us, reconnect with Christ, receive the strength available to us, and respond from a different center.
Freedom Is More Than a Moment
Colossians 3:15 tells us to let the peace of God rule in our hearts. To rule is to govern. God’s peace is not meant to be a brief interruption in an otherwise fear-governed life. It is meant to become the place from which we think, feel, speak, choose, relate, and serve.
That kind of change usually develops over time.
Anxiety may still knock at the door, but it does not have to furnish a room and take over the house. A trigger may still need attention, but it does not get to define our identity or determine our response. We can notice what is happening, care for the needs of the body, examine what we are believing, pray honestly, and receive appropriate help without treating the moment as proof that freedom has failed.
Spiritual growth does not require us to deny emotional, relational, cognitive, or physical realities. Counseling, medical care, healthy routines, wise boundaries, and safe relationships can all be part of responsible care. These supports do not replace Christ; they can help us become settled enough to receive truth and walk in the light we have been given.
Abide Before You Strive
Jesus said, “Abide in Me, and I in you”. A branch does not bear fruit by trying harder to be a branch. It bears fruit by abiding in the vine. The Anxiety Iceberg,
We can turn freedom into another performance goal. We measure ourselves, search for the perfect tool, and become discouraged when we still need support. Yet Jesus does not ask the branch to manufacture life. He asks it to stay connected to the source of life. In Communion from the Spirit Deep Dive series, I describe this as an experience we need “not just from time to time.” We are invited to live in communion with God day by day, hour by hour, and moment by moment.
The practices we have learned matter. Scripture, prayer, stillness, gratitude, truthful self-talk, spiritual discernment, healthy relationships, and practical care all have value. But they work best as pathways into connection, not as formulas we use to force an outcome. We do not have to make ourselves enough. We can remain in Christ, receive from Him, and obey the next thing He gives us.
Freedom Grows in a Body
Colossians 3:15 does not speak only about peace within an individual heart. It reminds us that we were called “in one body.” God did not design us to mature, heal, or carry purpose alone.
The body of Christ cannot grow apart from the body of Christ. (We Grow Together) We need people who can help us recognize progress, speak truth without pressure, sit with us when life is painful, and remind us where our strength comes from.
Receiving support is not a detour from freedom. Learning to live as part of a healthy body is part of freedom. We receive life from God and others, and over time we become able to offer life, peace, courage, and encouragement in return.
Carry His Life Forward
The goal is larger than feeling less anxious. Anxiety shrinks life around fear, but Christ opens life into peace, purpose, relationship, and love. As His life flows through us, what we carry into a room can begin to change. Our concern can become compassion instead of pressure. Our leadership can become service instead of control. Our vision can become faithful contribution instead of anxious striving.
Purpose does not have to look impressive. It may look like raising children, restoring a relationship, mentoring someone, serving quietly, or becoming a person whose presence brings peace. “When the life of Christ flows through you, purpose is happening.”
Today is the final day to receive the complete Anxiety Iceberg Collection at no cost. The campaign is ending, but the invitation to continued growth is not. Heart Change U’s daily devotionals, teaching, ministry resources, and opportunities for connection will continue.
So let peace rule. Stay in Christ. Keep receiving. Keep walking with healthy people. Then carry the life God gives you into the lives of others. Freedom is more than a moment; it is a life governed by the peace and presence of Christ.
Reflection Question
What would it look like for God’s peace to govern the way I think, respond, relate, and serve beyond this one moment?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for every place where You have already begun bringing truth, peace, and freedom into my life. Teach me to abide in You instead of turning growth into another performance or trying to produce fruit in my own strength. Help me receive responsible care and remain connected to healthy people who can walk with me. Let Your peace increasingly govern my thoughts, choices, relationships, and service. Make me a life-giving person who carries Your presence into the world around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Today's Step of Obedience
Create a simple continuation plan. Write one specific answer beneath each sentence:
I will abide in Christ by… Choose one small daily practice that helps you receive from Him.
I will remain connected by… Name one safe person, group, church, ministry, or professional support you will continue receiving from.
I will carry His life forward by… Identify one person or place where you can offer peace, encouragement, service, or faithful presence.
Choose one action you can take today. Keep it small enough to practice and meaningful enough to help you continue.

Communion
Freedom is not sustained by an occasional spiritual experience. Drawing from John 15, this teaching explores what it means to abide in Christ day by day, slow down enough to receive from Him, and allow His life to shape what we carry into the lives of others.
The Anxiety Iceberg
The final chapter, “Consumed by Christ,” moves beyond a quick-fix approach and explores peace as an inner governor, abiding as a lifestyle, healthy connection, lasting fruitfulness, and becoming a carrier of Christ’s life.
The complete collection remains available at no cost through September 30, 2026.
