Daily Devotional: What Flows Through Me Sticks to Me

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” - Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV)

God comes to those who make room for Him. That is not poetry. It is a spiritual law. What flows through us sticks to us. This is one of the simplest ways to understand transformation. People often think change happens primarily through effort: “Try harder, do better, be more disciplined.” Discipline matters, yet discipline alone cannot produce spiritual life. The deepest changes happen when God’s life flows through a person repeatedly, leaving His imprint behind.

Consider what happens in everyday life. Whatever you repeatedly take in starts to shape your inner world. What you repeatedly rehearse becomes familiar. What you repeatedly release becomes your default. This principle can work for good or for harm. If I repeatedly release bitterness, bitterness becomes more natural. If I repeatedly release fear, fear gains a well-worn path in my reactions. If I repeatedly release self-protection, I become less open and less alive.

God’s invitation is to let something else flow through me. His presence touches my spirit, then spills into my thinking, my emotions, and my choices. When His life flows through me, it leaves residue of peace, clarity, self-control, and love. That residue becomes part of my character. It becomes “laid up” in my heart.

This changes how I view eternity. Eternity is not only a destination. It is also a continuation of what has been formed inside me. How I live forever is connected to what is stored within me now. God is not mocked. Every word and action will be brought into judgment. That does not mean I live in terror. It means my life matters. God takes seriously what I cultivate and what I release.

Those who have embraced the life of God and nurtured the flow of God’s life within them will do many things worthy of reward, not because they were impressive people, but because God’s life was flowing through them. That is grace at work. Grace produces fruit that endures.

This also reshapes my view of “good works.” Many people either chase works to earn value or reject works because they fear legalism. Scripture refuses both extremes. God prepares good works ahead of time for us to walk in them, yet we are not saved by works. Works are meant to be the overflow of God’s life, not the substitute for it.

So I ask a simple question: what has been flowing through me lately? What do my reactions reveal? When pressure hits, what comes out of me without rehearsal? That is often what has been filling me. The good news is that the flow can change. The Holy Spirit is freely available to me if I make room for Him. If I create space to receive from God, what flows through me can shift, and what sticks to me will shift as well.

A receiving lifestyle is not complicated. It is steady. It is a daily turning. I make room for God, I receive His life, and then I walk forward in obedience. Over time, the flow of God’s life becomes more familiar than the flow of self.

Reflection Question

What “springs” have been coming out of my heart lately when I am under stress?

Prayer

Father, I want Your life to flow through me. Show me what has been flowing through my heart that is not of You. Teach me to make room for Your presence and to guard what I receive. Form Your character in me as I learn to live by grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

At the end of today, write down one moment when you reacted poorly and one moment when you responded well. Ask God what was “flowing” in each moment, and invite Him to shift the source.
