Daily Devotional: When Light Feels Uncomfortable

Life Sayings:
Light exposes what love intends to heal.
“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.” —Revelation 3:19
One of the great misunderstandings about God is the idea that His nearness should always feel good. Scripture paints a more honest picture. God is light, and light exposes. When God draws near, He does not simply affirm what already exists in us. He reveals what needs to change.
That revelation often feels uncomfortable. The early stages of encountering God frequently involve conviction. Conviction is the awareness that something within us is not aligned with truth. It is not condemnation. It is not rejection. It is love at work. Revelation 3:19 makes that clear. Jesus connects love directly to rebuke and correction. Love refuses to leave us unchanged.
There is a deep resistance to change built into human nature. What has been normal feels right, even when it is unhealthy. What challenges that normalcy feels threatening. Ego interprets exposure as danger. Self-protection reacts by withdrawing from the light. This explains why people often step back from God when conviction arises. They feel exposed and assume something has gone wrong, when in fact something important has begun.
God never changes because He is already perfect. We are the ones who must change because something in us has been distorted. Repentance is not emotional regret. Repentance is a change of direction. It is the willingness to turn away from self-centered patterns and move toward a way of life that blesses God and others.
Light and darkness cannot coexist. When light shines, something has to give. The question is not whether God will shine. The question is whether we will stay present long enough to be changed. Many people ask God to draw near, then retreat when He begins to deal with the heart. Making room for God requires staying in the light even when it reveals something we would rather avoid.
Conviction is a gift. It signals that God is near and actively involved. The moment we stop running from it and begin responding to it, communion deepens. Change begins. Freedom grows.
Reflection Question
When conviction shows up in my life, do I tend to lean in or pull away from God?
Prayer
Father, I confess that I often resist conviction because it feels uncomfortable. Help me see it as an expression of Your love. Give me the courage to stay in the light when You expose areas that need to change. Teach me to respond with repentance rather than retreat. Amen.
Today’s Step of Obedience
Think of one area where you have recently felt conviction. Write one sentence beginning with: “God may be inviting me to change…” Offer that area to Him in prayer today.
